In this article, I’m going to take you through my favorite winter moments: from the vibrant streets of the mountain Christmas to sports, recreation adventures at your doorstep.. Let my best winter activities in Innsbruck inspire. This 8 tips for Innsbruck in Winter, you should not miss!
1. Winter in Innsbruck at the ‘Top of Innsbruck’

If you’re staying in one of the hotels in Innsbruck’s city center or old town, you’re just a short walk from the Hungerburg funicular ‘s valley station . It’s near the Golden Roof and quickly takes you up to the Hungerburg district of Innsbruck . You’ll already get your first glimpse of the city, but wait, it gets even better! At Hungerburg, you’ll board the Seegrube cable car. With it, you’ll descend into this winter wonderland. At the top of the Seegrube, you’ll get off the gondola and take the Hafelekar cable car to the highest point in the city. In just a few minutes, you’ll be standing at the top of the
Hafelekar. The natural scenery up here is truly unique. From the Hafelekar mountain station, the hike continues on foot. It’s just a short walk up to the cross on the Hafelekar summit. Depending on your pace and the amount of snow, you can make it in about 15 minutes. Under normal conditions, with the right equipment and good visibility, you can easily reach the top.
HAFELEKAR – THE TOP OF INNSBRUCK
An unforgettable view and plenty of fresh mountain air await you when you take the Nordkette cable car up to the Hafelekar. The city’s highest point is not only known among freeriders for its steep couloir, but is also the ideal place to experience Innsbruck in winter without skis. Up here, at almost 2,300 meters, you can admire the Alpine peaks on foot and take a winter hike to the cross on the Hafelekar summit. If you don’t feel like hiking, you can also enjoy the view from the observation platform right at the mountain station .
WITH THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT TO THE HAFELEKAR
When it comes to skiing, it is clear that one of skis, poles, helmet, jacket, and Co needs. But it’s also helpful to pay attention to your equipment on a day trip during your winter vacation without skiing. Especially up on the Hafelekar, you’ll encounter snow and ice. Even if the paths are cleared, it can be icy. That’s why I would definitely not recommend going up in high heels. If you’re thinking, “Well, that’s obvious,” it’s not. Today on the Nordkette I met a woman wearing high heels in the snow. She quickly turned back and couldn’t make it up to the Karwendel viewpoint and the summit cross on the Hafelekar. I was wearing my good winter boots, which kept my feet warm and also kept the snow out of my shoes. My light crampons would have been useful, but I forgot them at home today. I paid the price immediately; I slipped up there, and quite badly. Luckily, nothing worse happened – so my advice is to take your crampons with you. If you don’t need them, no harm done. But you’ll be on the safe side either way. If you don’t already have crampons and are looking for the right model: Read our light crampons test.
2. Dining with a view of Innsbruck

You can also enjoy Innsbruck’s winter idyll with a cozy meal on the mountain . Take the Nordkette cable car directly to the Seegrube. At the
mountain restaurant on the Seegrube , you not only have a choice of regional specialties like “Wadlbeisser vom Schwein” (pork shank), but also a spectacular view of Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you can see the snow-covered peaks of the main Alpine ridge. And even on snowy, gray days, the view is unique.
3. Sunbath on the Seegrube when fog hangs in the valley.

A truly special experience in Innsbruck is relaxing on the Seegrube when the valley below is shrouded in fog. While winter in the city is characterized by cold and twilight, up here on the sun terrace amidst the mountains , you can soak up the warm rays of sunshine . The fog covering the city creates a fascinating contrast to the clear winter landscape rising above Innsbruck. A perfect moment for anyone seeking peace and relaxation in the Tyrolean Alps.
4. Innsbruck Winter on the Bergisel

A visit to Bergisel is particularly tempting in winter. Where Andreas Hofer once fought, you’ll now find one of Innsbruck’s most extraordinary sights. The ski jump on Bergisel is a major attraction thanks to its unique architecture. It was built according to the extraordinary plans of star architect Zara Hadid. With the new Bergisel ski jump, she created more than just a sports venue. Be sure to check out this marvel! You can take a funicular railway to the jump and then an elevator up to the top of the ski jump tower. There’s a large viewing terrace and a restaurant at the top. It’s the best place in Innsbruck to enjoy a slice of cake or have breakfast. We loved it; check out the pictures here:

5. Tobogganing for kilometer-long sled ride & eating Kaiserschmarrn

The Lehnberghaus toboggan run is a top tip for winter in Innsbruck. The entire route between the parking lot and the Lehnberghaus is groomed as a toboggan run in winter. Silvio and his snowcat ensure the natural toboggan run is in optimal condition. The starting point is at the parking lot, from where you hike up the groomed track. With an average gradient of 12%, the ascent is quite manageable even in winter. The Lehnberghaus itself offers a cozy place to stop for refreshments. Especially in February and March, visitors can enjoy the sun on the terrace and try the popular Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake). After a relaxing break, it’s time to head down the toboggan run. The descent stretches for almost
3.5 kilometers and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The toboggan run is one of the most beautiful in Tyrol and is still relatively uncrowded , allowing for an immersive nature experience . For those without their own sled, the Lehnberghaus also offers
sled rentals, making the ascent easier and allowing guests to start sledding immediately. Overall, the Lehnberghaus toboggan run is an ideal option for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking an unforgettable sledding experience amidst the wintery Tyrolean mountains.
