Hungerburg Christmas Market: A Panorama Above the Rooftops of Innsbruck
The Hungerburg Panorama Christmas Market is one of the most atmospheric markets in Innsbruck, primarily due to its breathtaking views over the illuminated city. From Friday to Sunday, traditional brass bands fill the air with festive music, creating a truly magical experience.
Among the many Christmas markets in Innsbruck, the one at Hungerburg holds a special place: it is the highest in the city and is widely considered the most scenic. Held at Hermann-Buhl-Platz, right outside the futuristic top station of the Hungerburgbahn funicular, it offers a peaceful and authentic Alpine Christmas atmosphere—a stark contrast to the bustling markets in the city center. While it remains a hidden gem during the day, it becomes a popular hotspot for visitors on weekend evenings. Best of all, entrance to the market is free.
Unique Atmosphere and Panoramic Views
The absolute highlight of this market is its spectacular location at 860 meters above sea level. Visitors can enjoy their Glühwein (mulled wine) or punch while taking in a dreamlike panoramic view of the sparkling city of Innsbruck in the valley below.
The atmosphere is most enchanting around 4:30 PM as twilight sets in. The contrast between the cozy market area—featuring about ten charming stalls—and the sea of lights below makes every visit unforgettable. The stalls themselves focus on traditional crafts, regional delicacies, and Tyrolean specialties like Kiachln and Spatzln.

Hungerburg Christmas Market Opening Hours
The market traditionally opens at the start of the Advent season and remains active throughout the holidays. During the peak season (late November to December 23), it opens in the early afternoon on weekdays and at noon on weekends.
A key feature of the Hungerburg Panorama Market is its extended season: unlike many smaller markets, it remains open until January 6th (Epiphany). This allows visitors to enjoy the unique winter magic during the quieter days between Christmas and New Year’s. The Hungerburgbahn operates until 7:15 PM, ensuring a relaxed ride back down to the city after the market closes.
Cultural Program and Family Activities
The market places a high value on a traditional supporting program. Every Advent weekend from 5:00 PM, brass ensembles perform classic Christmas carols. For families, the market is particularly attractive due to the fairy tale hours held every Saturday (until December 20).
For the ultimate experience, you can combine your visit with a trip further up the Nordkette: every Advent Sunday, brass players also perform at the Seegrube station (1,905 m), which pairs perfectly with an Advent brunch.
How to get to the Hungerburg Christmas Market?
You can reach the market from the city center in just eight minutes using the Hungerburgbahn. The valley station is located in the Innsbruck Old Town, just a short walk from the Golden Roof. The ride itself is an adventure, taking you from the historic center, across the Inn River, and steeply uphill past the Alpine Zoo to the final stop at Hermann-Buhl-Platz. I’ve written a detailed guide on exactly where to board and how parking works in my dedicated post about the Hungerburgbahn, featuring plenty of photos and insider tips.
