Sparkassenplatz Innsbruck: A Modern Landmark in the City Center

You will find Sparkassenplatz right in the heart of Innsbruck’s city center, nestled between the famous Maria-Theresien-Straße to the west and Museumstraße to the east. Despite its prime location, many visitors overlook this spot at first glance, even though it sits directly above the city’s largest underground parking facility.

One of the most fascinating curiosities of Sparkassenplatz is its ownership: although it looks and functions like a typical public square, the entire area belongs to the Tiroler Sparkasse bank. The architecture is dominated by the bank’s headquarters and the award-winning Kaufhaus Tyrol department store, designed by world-renowned architect David Chipperfield. Connecting the square to the main shopping street is the Hörtnagl Passage, a weather-protected underground walkway.

The 2021 Redesign and Renovation

The modern appearance of the square is the result of an extensive renovation project. After several failed attempts to seal water leaks in the underground garage, the Tiroler Sparkasse decided in 2018 to combine necessary structural repairs with a complete redesign of the surface.

Following a series of design competitions in 2019 and detailed planning in 2020, construction began on February 1, 2021. The project was completed exactly 272 days later, on October 31, 2021. This renovation transformed the area into the clean, contemporary urban space you see today.

Dining, Shopping, and the Arts & Crafts Market

While Sparkassenplatz primarily serves as a modern urban space and thoroughfare, it is brought to life by various culinary and cultural offerings. The main draw is the adjacent Kaufhaus Tyrol, but you also benefit from the immediate proximity to the countless restaurants along Maria-Theresien-Straße.

A particular highlight of life on the square is the regular Arts & Crafts Market. This market takes advantage of the central location to showcase local artists and craftsmen, offering a charming, handmade alternative to mainstream commercial shopping.

Sparkassenplatz serves as an excellent starting point for exploring Innsbruck on foot. By walking through a small, unassuming passage, you find yourself instantly in the middle of the bustling Maria-Theresien-Straße.
