Innsbruck ski resorts – these are my 4 favorites!

These are the fantastic ski resorts near Innsbruck , so close to home! The combination of the city of Innsbruck and the ski slopes on the surrounding mountains is unique. Nowhere else can you go directly from a large city like Innsbruck  to the mountains for skiing. Without a long commute, you can hit the slopes in the morning after breakfast. Many locals also take advantage of the proximity to the ski area to squeeze in a quick two-hour run before or after work. If you like, you can visit a different ski resort near Innsbruck every day. You have so many options to choose from . Depending on how much travel time you’re willing to take from Innsbruck, you have thousands of kilometers of slopes to explore! The large ski resorts in Tyrol are all around, and there are also small, grassy areas perfect for children to practice on.

I sat down and compiled a list of my favorite ski resorts in Innsbruck. I’ll show you what I particularly appreciate about each resort and why it might be something for you too. I’ve focused on the slopes that are really close to the resort, where, depending on your starting point in Innsbruck, you should be able to reach your skiing dreams in about 30 minutes. I’ll also show you two unique features that can only be found in one Innsbruck ski resort. You’ve probably never heard of Klumpern or Figln ? – you’re not alone. These are two very special forms of winter sports that are particularly popular in Innsbruck. I’ll show you where you can do them and what they actually are. Have fun with this, or simply enjoy skiing in Innsbruck.

Innsbruck Ski Area Nordkette

The Nordkette is Innsbruck’s ski resort for freeriders.

The adventure begins, of course, with the ski resort practically on the doorstep of many Innsbruck residents: the Nordkette mountain range . If you live in the Hungerburg district , you’ll be right on the slopes when the snow conditions are good. The houses in Hungerburg are located along the
Nordkette’s valley run. But even if you live in Innsbruck’s city center , you’re not far away. The Nordkette funicular railway whisks you directly from the old town up to an altitude of around 2,000 meters in just a few minutes, without needing a ski bus. The Nordkette is the closest ski resort to Innsbruck. The ski slopes are located around the Seegrube. It’s snow-sure and very sunny up here, perfect for children. The magic carpet lift right next to the Seegrube cable car station is an ideal starting point for learning to ski. And for warming up or taking a break, the restaurant with its large
sun terrace is just around the corner.

The Hafelekar area beckons freeriders with its gullies and cirques. When snow conditions are stable, it’s a dream come true. Around the Seegrube, freeriders also enjoy the numerous powder runs alongside the groomed slopes. The freeride community feels right at home on the Nordkette. You’ll quickly meet like-minded people here. Otherwise, the Nordkette ski area is a small resort popular with Innsbruck residents for a few hours of skiing. Its proximity to the city makes it perfect for a quick run before or after work. A dream come true for most visitors! Where else can you find that?

Figl on the nordkette Innsbruck

INSIDER TIP: FIGLN
Figln is a truly unique experience on the Nordkette mountain range . It’s really cool when, in spring, it seems like half the city heads out to slide in the firn. Since trying it myself, I’ve become a self-confessed Figln enthusiast. Figln in soft snow under sunny skies is an annual tradition for me. The snow conditions on the Nordkette, combined with the slope’s aspect, are ideal, making it perfect up here. Want to know what Figln is all about and how it works? Then read my post here – and especially check out these pictures: –> how to Figln

Innsbruck Ski Area – on the local mountain Patscherkofel

Innsbruck ski resort for the whole family: The Patscherkofel
Innsbruck ski resort for the whole family: The Patscherkofel

For skiing, the Patscherkofel is Innsbruck’s local mountain. Here you’ll find the most slopes relative to its proximity to the city. The Innsbruck ski area is easily accessible by public transport: Take the bus from the city up to the holiday villages on the sunny plateau. The new valley station of the Patscherkofel cable car was built in Igls; there you get off the bus and onto the modern gondola . It takes you from 1009 meters up to the mountain station at 1965 meters. The view up there is incredible! You can see for miles – and with this view, you head down the sunny slopes. For families with children, the practice area right next to the valley station is perfect. Kofele’s Kinderland is a huge 15,000 square meters, with a magic carpet and a child-friendly slope with a gentle gradient. This is a great place for children to learn to ski.

Insider tip Hiking in WINTER
For all of the above the mountain station in the snow, the sun is in your face seem to want: A groomed trail leads easily rise of the Serpentine to the Serpentine to the Patscherkofel around. So you come on a 3-Kilometer-long winter Hiking trail to the summit. A beautiful track with a ton of views!

Innsbruck Ski Resorts – Glungezer

Ski resorts in Innsbruck – on the Glungezer with a view of the Karwendel mountains

The Glungezer is probably the most underrated ski resort near Innsbruck. Thanks to the new gondola lifts, it has become an attractive ski area. By car, you can reach the Glungezerbahn valley station from Innsbruck in just a few minutes. The ski bus also starts in the Inn Valley and stops right at the lift entrance. The new gondola takes you up to Halsmarter, where the skiing fun begins. It’s not too crowded here. My favorite part of the Glungezer is the sunny slopes on the Schartenkogel. From 2,304 meters, you can ski down the scenic runs. Absolutely stunning! It’s been quite a while since I was up there in winter. Looking at the pictures, I should go back soon… Since the 2021/22 winter season, the Glungezer has offered a unique feature that none of the other ski resorts mentioned offer: a snow-sure toboggan run . Take the gondola up to the mountain station at 2054 meters. From there, descend 500 meters in altitude via 18 switchbacks to the mid-station, where you can board the gondola again.

INSIDER TIP: KLUMPERN
And you’ll find something else unique on the Glungezer: Klumpern . It’s a mix of skiing and sledding. The best way to describe it is this: A Klumper is a single-track sled with a ski as its runner. Hard to imagine if you’re not familiar with it. That’s why you can learn everything about Klumpern here. The small village of Tulfes at the foot of the Glungezer is considered a Klumpern mecca. The Klumpern Association, founded specifically for this sport, takes care of all things related to this special winter activity. Even Klumpern World Championships have been held here. Once a week, you can try Klumpern as a guest under instruction. Or you can head out on your own: There’s a snow-sure spot to try Klumpern at the Glungezer’s mid-station. You can rent Klumperns in Hall in Tirol at the local tourist office. But now, finally, here’s the promised link to Klumpern .

Innsbruck Ski Resort – Rosshütte Seefeld

Ski resorts in Innsbruck - wide runs a lot of views of the Rosshütte Seefeld
Innsbruck ski resorts – wide slopes, great views from the Rosshütte in Seefeld

You’ll find even more ski slopes at the Rosshütte ski resort in Seefeld . It’s the largest ski area in the Karwendel mountains. Sunny runs and guaranteed snow make this ski resort near Innsbruck exciting. At Rosshütte, you can ski on the wide slopes and relax on the sunny deck chairs. The view is of the fantastic Wetterstein Mountains. You can also carve in powder at Rosshütte if you know where to look. Around the Härmelekopf, local experts ride off-piste. If you’re skiing with children, there’s a large children’s area near the valley station with a magic carpet and rope tow. So you don’t have to take the lift to practice. I like the sun loungers and the good food up at Rosshütte. Want to read more?

Skiing Tour In Innsbruck

Besides classic downhill skiing, the mountains around Innsbruck are also perfect for ski touring . The sheer number of mountains makes it ideal. The diverse opportunities for after-work ski touring are also unique. The ski resorts in Innsbruck have coordinated and offer dedicated night ski tours. Slope preparation begins later in each resort so that ski tourers can enjoy a night tour on the slopes after nightfall. With so many ski resorts in Innsbruck, you can plan a night ski tour any day of the week. Amazing, right? You can find more information about which ski tours are possible when and where to go for a daytime ski tour in the article about ski touring in Innsbruck . For your own safety, please adhere to the designated ski touring days! The ski slopes are closed at night outside of these times, and the winches of the snow groomers are deadly to ski tourers

Winter in Innsbruck

Fancy winter in Innsbruck? In this city and the surrounding mountains, you can experience so much in the snow. I have even more tips here, beyond skiing. Known as a sports venue, but also a great day trip destination, is the Bergisel Ski Jump. You can visit it and follow in the footsteps of the Olympics. Breakfast in the Sky Restaurant, with its view of wintry Innsbruck, is especially wonderful. For everyone who loves winter with snow and sledding: Innsbruck has many kilometers of toboggan runs. In this post, I’ll show you 5 very special toboggan runs in Innsbruck . Get inspired:
